History of Beverly, Massachusetts
Covering just over 22 square miles in Essex County along the North Shore of Massachusetts, the City of Beverly can be found about 25 miles northeast of Boston. As of the 2020 Census, Beverly was home to 42,670 residents.
Before Europeans arrived, Native Americans inhabited what we now know as northeastern Massachusetts for thousands of years. The modern-day City of Beverly sits between what were once Naumkeag and Agawam settlements. In 1626, the area was colonized as part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. At that time, Beverly was part of the City of Salem; however, in 1668 Beverly (named after a town in England) separated from Salem and became known as the separate town of Beverly.
Beverly is known as the “Birthplace of America’s Navy,” (a title often disputed by Marblehead, Massachusetts) because the first ship commissioned for the US military sailed from Beverly Harbor on September 5, 1775. Beverly is also known as the “birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution” because it was also home to the first cotton mill in America built in 1787. Beverly was officially incorporated as a city in 1894.
Beverly grew and thrived during the early years of the 20th century. Beverly was home to the United Shoe Machinery Corporation an early landmark example of reinforced concrete construction, that went into production in 1906. President William Howard Taft summered in Beverly from 1909 through 1912.
Beverly Today
The City of Beverly remains a desirable suburb of Boston for those who want the idyllic setting of a small town while retaining the proximity to the bustling activity of Boston. Residents and visitors alike enjoy watching films at the Cabot Street Cinema Theatre decorated in early 20th-century style. Cabot Street was home to the Le Grand David Spectacular Magic Company, the nation’s longest running magician’s show which ran from February 1977 through May 2012. The Larcom Theatre is another favorite of theatre lovers. This recently restored 560-seat historic multipurpose music and performing arts theatre was originally built in 1912 and is known for its acoustics.

Estate planning is somewhat unique within the law in that it is not a legal matter that is ever truly “resolved.” On the contrary, for your estate plan to be successful it needs to be an ongoing venture that is continuously reviewed and updated to reflect changes that occur in your life. As a young, single, adult just starting your career, your estate planning concerns may be limited to a Last Will and Testament that ensures you do not leave behind an intestate estate. When you marry or become a parent for the first time, you should take the time to update your estate plan to include your spouse and/or child. You may also wish to incorporate new components into your plan, such as incapacity planning and probate avoidance. Hopefully, the value of your estate will grow along with your family, prompting the need to include asset protection strategies into your plan as well. Once you have a well-established family and career, you should begin to focus more on the future by creating a retirement planning component within your estate plan. As you get closer to actually retiring you will also want to discuss the need for Medicaid planning and funeral planning with your estate planning attorney. The estate planning team at Legacy Care Law Firm would be honored to be your choice to help you with your unique estate planning needs.
At Legacy Care Law Firm we are committed to being with you throughout your life journey to ensure that you, your assets, and your loved ones are protected.
